Senior at Old Dominion University | Aspiring Mental Health Advocate:
Hello Everyone! My name is Dejaune (Deja) Thompson, and I am proud to call Richmond, Virginia, my home. I am a senior at Old Dominion University, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Human Services. I am currently applying to graduate programs, including doctoral studies in Human Services and Counseling Psychology, as well as master’s programs focusing on Family, Marriage, and Couples Counseling. My passion for mental health is deeply rooted in fostering culturally competent mental health services and dismantling generational trauma in African American communities.
My research interests center around promoting healthy coping mechanisms, reducing the stigma surrounding help-seeking behaviors, and ensuring mental health services are both accessible and culturally sensitive. I aim to contribute to my community by establishing a mental health practice in Richmond, Virginia, that prioritizes spirituality and holistic approaches to healing.
Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to share my work in multiple forums. My research has been published in the McNair National Research Journal under the title “Switching the Narrative: Pastor’s Beliefs and Reasonings.” I’ve also presented at several conferences, with upcoming appearances at Hampton University’s 2nd Annual Black Decolonial Psychology Conference and the Monarch Leadership Conference at ODU. At the latter, my co-facilitator and I are developing a workshop exploring how art as a leisure activity transforms mental health and well-being for leaders.
In addition, I am collaborating on a book chapter with research mentors from James Madison University and William & Mary, which emphasizes the importance of school and faith-based partnerships in supporting youth to excel and thrive.
My professional experiences include serving as a mentor for NextGen programs, supporting Ambassadors of Virginia initiatives, and completing an internship with progress evaluation, all of which have equipped me with the skills to inspire positive change. I am driven by a mission to improve the mental health and well-being of families and individuals through meaningful research, advocacy, and community outreach.
